Dexon Technology USA has successfully completed a 150+ km operation assessing metal loss and crack detection in North America.
The challenge: Back-to-back 1.5D bends in a low-pressure pipeline.
Rather than back down, our team got to work.
Within just four months, our engineers and machinists designed and built a new ultrasonic crack detection (UT-CD) Hawk tool from the ground up to meet the job’s demanding conditions.
Key innovations included:
Reduced tool body diameter and length
Increased joint strength and bolt reinforcement
Reconfigured cup system
Packed over 600 transducers a hair’s breadth apart (literally) into 2 bodies
The result: a high-resolution Hawk that could navigate difficult geometry while delivering high-quality data.
The UT-CD Hawk run was followed by the UT-MC Falcon, which delivered high-resolution metal loss data.
Both the metal loss and crack detection runs were first-run successes—with full coverage and no navigability issues.
While the final report is still in progress, early results indicate a potentially major win for the client.
With cleaner signal resolution and more reliable crack differentiation, this inspection may help the operator avoid unnecessary digs, extend asset life, and reduce overall maintenance costs—translating into significant savings.
